Live: Pilani Bubu with support from Hannah Moule

Live: Pilani Bubu with support from Hannah Moule (Moulettes cellist & singer)

Pilani Bubu, South Africa’s indelible storyteller, brings two of her most potent and critically acclaimed works to the stage: Folklore Chapter 2: Ekuseni and Nay’Indaba. This live experience is a carefully curated journey through ancestral wisdom, spiritual inheritance, and the pulse of modern-day South Africa — told through music that is rich, raw, and rhythmically transcendent.

With support from Hannah Moule, of Moulettes fame; “I’ve been working on a solo show, going deep in to Cello world & experimenting with new songs. The cello & voice together is a quest of sonic adventures.”

“Pilani Bubu’s song is auroral. It evokes the purity of the first morning of the world” AMINA (France)

In Ekuseni (translated: at dawn), Pilani returns to the sacred knowledge of her lineage, exploring the rites, rituals, and resilience passed down through generations. Each song is a ceremony, blending folk music, spoken word, and soulful jazz into a reflective meditation on cultural legacy. With a voice that glows with clarity and emotional depth, she conjures a dawn of remembrance — honouring the stories, gifts, and energies of her ancestors.

From there, the performance opens into a sonic confrontation with South Africa’s 30-year journey since independence. In Nay’Indaba she channels ancestral memory, contemporary resistance and the power of womanhood — exploring the country’s unfinished stories — on a platform of afrobeat, jazz-rock, psychedelic fire and lyrical militancy. It’s a call to gather, to bear witness, and to dream forward.

“Called by an artist of commanding authority, Nay’ Indaba is a musical conference of pressing importance.” SONGLINES (UK)

Pilani Bubu’s music, recently featured in Netflix’s The Brave Ones, and recognised with a SAMA Award for Best African Adult Contemporary Album. She’s travelled stages across South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, France, UK, Czech Republic and beyond, building a remarkable reputation as one of Africa’s most profound and genre-defying voices.

“A magnificent discovery, truly original, with a remarkable touch to combine with its folk and its astonishing vibrato with atmospheres alternately jazz-world, trad’, soul-pop and afro, where very urban with these numerous and percussive spoken words which borrow from hip hop and rap.” JAZZ-RHONE-ALPES (France)

Pilani Bubu is electric — commanding the stage with grace, purpose, and radical tenderness. Whether you’re a long-time follower or discovering her music for the first time, this event promises an intimate live experience that echoes South African storytelling with a globally resonant sound.
